Whereas the original Kalibr 3M14 traded performance blows with the Tomahawk’s Block IV revision in what amounts to an approximate draw tilted slightly in Kalibr’s favor, Kalibr-M drastically outranges its US counterpart at 4,500 against 1,700 kilometers. The most significant advantage of the 3M14T and its family is that they can be fired from a wider variety of smaller ships than the American ones that usually carry the Tomahawk, making it easier to deploy. It is also being developed to fire from fixed land bases, vehicles, and aircraft. Tomahawk likely outclasses Kalibr is ECM capability. While Tomahawk’s IV block revision included electronic counter-countermeasures, the Kalibr family is relatively susceptible to jamming techniques. With the modification, Block V Tomahawk has improved its capabilities. Its networking capabilities are beyond that of most operational cruise missiles by a long margin. The MiG-31 would not fare well in air-to-air engagements against contemporary fighters such as the F-15—but that’s simply not what it was designed to do. These Are The Most Dangerous Russian Military Aircraft When it comes to air power, it’s no secret that the United States and the West have often held an edge over Russia. Moscow has proved willing to sell its aircraft to nations both large and small that the United States and Europe have shunned. And since many countries around the world don’t have a need for the most advanced technologies that Western planes boast, Russian aircraft often is an attractive, cheaper alternative to purchasing planes from the United States or European powers. As a result, many air forces around the world are built around Soviet and Russian-made planes, or derivatives from them. And, with Russia undertaking a massive military modernization program in the coming years, this is likely to be true to a large extent for decades to come (albeit, Russia is likely to face greater competition from emerging defense exporters like China). As such, any serious observer of air power around the world must have an appreciation of Russia’s top military planes. The last two centuries have seen these ships grow from small wooden minnows, tasked with destroying as a single ship, to gargantuan steel leviathans able to carry a full thermonuclear arsenal. With the dawn of the Cold War, the submarines' mission has become one of deterrence and infiltration. Therefore, the design of modern submarines has evolved to include the latest sonar and sensor technology. Much like their floating counterparts, submarines also house a wide assortment of weapons. However, nearing the end of the Cold War, the USSR developed the Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut to look at the potential of forward-swept wing designs. Sukhoi designed the Berkut to match the US’s Grumman X-29 program. The design of both aircraft are eerily similar as well! However, just like the X-29, the Su-47 was a complete failure. Russia vs. America: Which Army Has the Best 'Big Guns'? America's army has large field artillery, but Russia's are serious business. Can Washington come up with an equal? While Russia’s military is smaller than during the Cold War, it still fields a powerful force of howitzers, multiple rocket launchers, and ballistic missiles. Russia can project long-range firepower via weapons such as the BM-30 Smerch multiple rocket launcher, with a range of 60 miles, or the SS-26 Iskander ballistic missile with a range of 250 miles. In contrast, the U.S. Army’s M109A7 Paladin 155-mm self-propelled howitzer has a range of about 15 miles with regular shells and 20 miles with rocket-assisted projectiles.
